Mudjacking Your Porch Steps • Grandma Has Fallen and Can’t Get Up...

The most common reason a consumer needs mudjacking repair is for safety reasons. Someone has usually tripped and fallen or they see obvious trip-and-fall hazards. Yes, when the sides are raised and corners start to pop up due to the soil under the foundation settling, it looks unsightly. But, we can sometimes just get used to the way it looks because we have more pressing concerns. However, when it becomes an issue of safety, it should become a priority to repair it.

A customer called us and wanted to know about mudjacking porch steps in Olathe. He told us it was a solid concrete set of five steps that was sinking toward the house and also leaning toward one side. He didn’t think it was a safety hazard until his grandmother had fallen down them. Being an elderly person, they were just enough askew to put her off balance. She had her hand on the railing but it didn’t help very much. Besides bumps, bruises and a scratch, grandma was okay. But the amount of guilt and regret this grandson felt over the incident was truly overwhelming for him. He wanted to know if this is something we can fix A.S.A.P. We came right out to take a look.

The steps were a little more askew than I think he wanted to believe. We also showed him how water was draining off the steps toward his foundation. He wasn’t currently getting any water in places he wouldn’t want but that would surely change once enough soil was eroded away. We told him we could definitely solve the problem by mudjacking the porch steps. We could level them out, no problem. We explained to him exactly what we would do and how long it would take. He had a lot of questions about porch step mudjacking and wondered how long it would last. He was told they would end up askew again in a few years. I told him this definitely wasn’t the case and I was aware of the myth. I told him the soil is always going to settle unless it is compacted first. So, unless it’s a matter of water drainage eroding the soil, the soil won’t continuously compact for years on-end. His home had been around for a sufficient amount of time, he should be okay once we fixed the problem under his steps. We explained to him how there were most-likely areas of open space (voids) in the soil under the steps to have had that degree of sloping.

When he was finished with his questions about porch steps mudjacking he gave his approval and we quickly eliminated his safety issue with his steps. When you have issues with your concrete slab structures around your home, always look at it from the standpoint of safety. Can someone trip? Can the heel of a woman’s dress shoe catch? Is it high enough to bump someone off of a bike if they hit it? You can call Olathe Mudjacking for an honest assessment and free written and detailed estimate. Better safe than sorry and the pain of regret!
